Modest LONG HAI , 20km around the coast from Vung Tau, is a drowsy
and relaxing holiday resort. Sands here are arguably more enticing than
those at Vung Tau; dunes fringe the town's eastern extreme; while to the
west stands a fishing village, complete with stilthouses and a huge
flotilla of fishing boats. Long Hai is served by buses from Ho Chi
Minh's Mien Dong Station; coming from Vung Tau, you'll need to take a
bus to Ba Ria and then change at the bus station for another bus into
Long Hai. A huge, domed mansion, set amid frangipanis, the Palace Hotel
(tel 064/868364; $5-10) is a gem of a place to stay , with a range of
good-value, spacious quarters. There are similar rooms at the nearby
Rang Dong (tel 064/868356; $10-15); or if money is tight, there are box-like
rooms, some sharing facilities, at the Ngoc Minh (tel 064/868429; under
$5). At the other end of the scale, try the Long Hai ( Kach San Du Lich)
(tel 064/868010; $15-40), where all rooms have hot water and air-con;
its location is set further up from the other three hotels, which are on
the main drag parallel to the beach.
