LANG SON |

| |
| For most people, LANG SON is merely an overnight stop on the journey
through the northeast or en route to China , only 18km away to the north.
The Ky Cung River splits the town in two, leaving the main bulk on the
north side of the Ky Lua Bridge and provincial offices to the south.
Highway 1, the town's main north-south artery, is called Tran Dang Ninh,
and along here you'll find Ky Lua market , which is well worth
investigating in the early morning when Tay, Nung and Dao women come to
trade. Chinese imports dominate alongside an amazing array of local
produce, from freshwater fish to silkworm larvae. The post office lies
near the Ky Lua Bridge, 200m east of the highway down Le Loi Street.
Next door is the provincial bus station , though most long-distance
buses will drop you on the main road. Most hotels exchange dollars and
yuan. Budget travellers should head straight for the clean, friendly and
well-priced rooms at Hoa Phuong Guesthouse (tel 025/871233; $5-10) on
the highway between the bridge and Ky Lua market. A few hundred metres
further north, opposite the market entrance, the Tam Thanh (tel
025/870979; $10-20) is a well-kept older hotel with large, comfortable
rooms. For food , try street kitchens on Tran Dang Ninh - no. 28 is
recommended, opposite the junction with Tam Thanh. |
