CAU TREO AND VINH |
| |
|
|
| |
| Although Lao Bao is by far the most popular land crossing into Laos,
it is also possible, though still tricky, to cross the border at CAU
TREO , 105km west of the city of Vinh on Highway 8; the biggest hurdle
is getting the exit point on your Vietnamese visa changed. There's a
daily bus (6am) from Vinh bus station as far as Trung Tam (formerly
known as Huong Son), the last settlement of any size before the border.
From here you'll either have to pick up a motorbike taxi for the last
35km to Cau Treo or, better still, hitch a ride on a truck heading all
the way to Lak Xao , 35km across the border in Laos . Alternatively,
hotels and travel agents in Vinh can arrange a car all the way to the
border (105km) for a princely $80. Thus far, facilities at Cau Treo
amount to about half a dozen pho stalls, so sort out money and anything
else you need before leaving Vinh. In VINH , you can stay at the
ostentatious Hong Ngoc, just north of the bus station at 99 Le Loi (tel
038/841314; $10-20), or at Railway Station Guesthouse (tel 038/853754;
$5-10), a basic guesthouse above a café in the northeast corner of the
station forecourt. |
